A little levity goes a long way. Or in the case of my list, a LOT of levity. I curated a comedy-heavy list partially because I don’t believe film critics have fully acknowledged the virtues and challenges of this undervalued genre.
Honourable mentions: Close-Up, Wavelength, In A Lonely Place, The Fly (1986), Beau Travail, The House is Black, Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels, Killer of Sheep, and Before Sunrise.
