2001, The 400 Blows and Taxi Driver were always going to make my list. The rest I decided on with a great deal of anguish.
All I can think of are the films I cut: Bande a Part, Chinatown, Come and See, Colonel Blimp, Point Blank, The Thin Red Line, Throne of Blood. I could have made a top ten just out of films by Powell & Pressburger, Coppola and Kubrick, but in the end there are favourite filmmakers I didn't even find room for once: Bresson, Godard, Tarkovsky, Visconti, Welles.
Such omissions would be difficult to live with if I hadn't already accepted this: that my final choices only reflect how I feel today. The top ten I put together next time will be better.
