One for the Road: a stylish but superficial Thai road trip

“Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar Wai may be credited as producer but this commercial story is far from his art film wheelhouse.”

One for the Road (2021)

Aoon, dying of cancer, calls his rich, New York-based friend Boss and drags him back to Thailand for a road trip of girlfriends past. Closure achieved with Alice, Noona and Roong, he decides it’s time to clear the air with Boss.

Thai director Baz Poonpiriya, whose last film Bad Genius was a domestic smash hit, pulls out all of the stops with a flashy, stylish film full of camera trickery. It’s a shame that the beauty is skin deep: the two male leads are unpleasant and utterly undeserving of their exes, who serve as flimsy signposts on their road to self-discovery.
