If there's a link between the titles on my list it's emotional transcendence - these are films that both depict and engender heightened states of being, whether through romantic love or artistic grace, encounters with the divine and otherworldly or incidents of extreme trauma and violence. The cinema of ecstasy, and the ultimate escapism.
