IVANOVO DETSTVO

1962 USSR

A dreamlike world as a reflection of war; the most profound and personal portrayal of the depth of human soul, of loss, pain, innocence. Of absence and of emptiness.

Seven Samurai

1954 Japan

A film that made me want to become a filmmaker myself. I can’t remember the exact reason. Probably because, as a child, I wanted to be one of the seven samurai. Cinema is for me the very image of childhood dreams.

LJUBAVNI SLUCAJ ILI TRAGEDIJA SLUZBENICE PTT

1967 Yugoslavia

Fatalism and love. The free, crazy, imaginative and playful world of one of the greatest Yugoslav directors, Dušan Makavejev.

Close-up

1989 Iran

The most impressive clash of documentary reality and fiction. Life and imagination intertwine, just like they do in the imaginary life of the film’s main character.

MÉG KÉR A NÉP

1971 Hungary

Life as dance, play and illusion. A choreographed reality in the context of powerful social engagement. A dreamlike, but also cruel, portrayal of the world in one of the most unusual films I’ve ever seen.

À bout de souffle

1960 France

Because cinema became what it is when this film was made.

ALICE IN DEN STÄDTEN

1974 Federal Republic of Germany

Journey as the sole purpose. Man’s need to keep running, only to find himself.

Kes

1969 United Kingdom

About a boy’s dream, his escape and search for his own world. Condemnatory, powerfully socially engaged, but also touching and tender. I could watch this film every day.

They Shoot Horses, Don't They?

1969 USA

A depiction of the contemporary world, more present and up-to-date now than at the time the film was made. The most important cinematic critique of capitalism.

Ashes and Diamonds

1958 Poland

About an anti-hero, a rebel and a misfit, without the glamour of popular culture. This is the closest to the stories and heroes I try to address in my films.
