The more time I spend with them, the more I am convinced that “Best” and “of all time” are profoundly stupid ways to categorise artworks. It seems an arbitrary exercise to compare and quantify the quality of films that are attempting to do wildly different things in completely different contexts. And anyway: how should I know if new movies can stand up to the weight of history—the world’s but especially my own. I hate lists, hate the graceless act of nailing my limited knowledge and changing taste to the wall. Unfortunately that is all I can do—offer 10 films that have marked me and lodged their images in my brain,10 great films that I recommend without reservation, 10 films that tell you something about the specific things I personally find interesting and/or important today.
