Criticism being subjective, and the notion of 'ten greatest' therefore meaningless, I've instead chosen ten favourite films (listed in chronological, not preferential order) – touchstones in my own life, to which I return again and again.
It means omitting entire filmographies I revere (Hou Hsiao-hsien, Kiarostami, Naruse, Almodovar) and, somewhat dismayingly, anything made in this century. But a runner's-up list would almost certainly include 'There Will Be Blood', 'Holy Motors', 'Mulholland Drive' and 'Zama'.
