These are some films that have been formative to me; films I return to for comfort and inevitably discover something new; ones that I admire for their ambition and scope. The inclusion of Magic Mike XXL is entirely serious. It has a central place in my pantheon. I watched it in the summer of 2015 with my friends Ariel and Dan. We had just graduated from college; I was filled with anxiety about the future. It was a rainy day in Chicago, and with nothing else to do we took the bus into the city and walked into the downtown AMC and bought a ticket to whatever was on, not knowing what to expect. And what a treasure we discovered. The audience in the room whooped. It was wonderful, it was extra, it knew entirely what it was about and what it was here to do. Gripping my friends tight – because where else was I to put all this emotion! – I felt surrounded by love and, just fleetingly, wholly invincible. Later that summer we had a Channing Tatum movie marathon.
