I made a list of films by women directors because I think it's time to reframe the conversation on the canon. Highlighting both the diversity and intersectionality of identities and the ways in which people live their lives within history, the titles in this list investigate how cinema represents women. Although each film speaks both to history and to its respective moment, collectively these films are breaking through in a male-dominated industry that for too long has held them back.
Surrounding these titles are immense clouds of other female-driven films. It is up to us whether it turns into a catalytic thundercloud—and whether we will bask in its rainbow.
