In perusing the results of the 2012 edition of this poll, I'm struck by the very precise function of its insight: to generate a snapshot of how film critics and practitioners -- those individuals around the world who have dedicated their professional lives to this medium -- feel about the art form, identifying and celebrating its most enduring, significant achievements as a means of articulating its potential for transcendence. It's in this spirit that I've tried to formulate my own contribution, knowing that my choices are beholden to the contours of my experience, as every human encounter with art must be.
