Call Me by Your Name
Sun drenched, melancholy and poignant film about first love, family and art, topped off with beautiful cinematography and a generous Sufjan Stevens soundtrack.
Grey Gardens
A complicated mother daughter relationship brought to screen with humour, pathos and true commitment from a legendary documentary duo. Each time I watch this I come away with a different feeling.
Été 85
I find all of Ozon's films so compelling and emotionally rich, but Summer of '85 is my favourite - a beautiful coastal first love romance with a dark edge.
Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN
Sexuality, heartbreak and a lust for life combine in this glorious coming of age tale.
Moonlight
A truly tender and timeless story about identity and finding yourself. Poetic, heartbreaking, uplifting.. it has everything for me. And it's a dream to look at.
The last Black Man in San Francisco
Amazingly poetic and touching film about gentrification and the lives it damages. Absolutely stunning - it makes me fall back in love with San Francisco every time I watch it.
Théo and Hugo
Although this film opens with a wild 20 minute orgy in a Parisian club, it still manages to be hopelessly romantic, and the last conversation on the stairwell is absolutely perfect. Relatable gay love story which I watch time and time again.
A Ghost Story
Tackles the enormity of existence, loss, grief and true love in a wildly innovative way. The soundtrack is perfect and the acting sublime. I love this film!
Man with a Movie Camera
A film about how we go about recording the small beautiful moments in city life - it still resonates with me a century after it was made.
My Own Private Idaho
With a generous attitude towards sex, sex work and queerness, this meditative road trip movie and character piece always felt ahead of its time. It showed my young gay self a tender, unorthodox on screen same sex love story.
