In The Infinity of Lists, Umberto Eco suggests that lists are compiled “when we do not know the boundaries of what we wish to portray or when we cannot provide a definition by essence for something”. This is definitely true of this list. A list that pays subjective testimony to the multiplicity of film canons and histories, to the impossibility of univocally defining what cinema is, let alone ranking it.
