The Sight and Sound poll has been a fascination since 2002, when I first saw it and pored through the list. As an educational tool I found it immensely useful, a succinct checklist to absorb the greatest films of all time, which in turn provided off-shoots to the whole careers of directors I'd not heard of before, and in time I came to discover what I feel is the most valuable part of the list – the also-rans. That very long list of far more idiosyncratic choices lost due to a lack of consensus, obscurities waiting to be discovered, great directors who had split votes and so didn't poll at all and so on. As such I'm devoting my list to that cause because in 20 years the internet and the availability of information has come a long way, spurred on by the great work of archivists, programmers and home video labels, of course, who influence those lists. These ten films I believe are all masterpieces by unsung filmmakers deserving of greater awareness; I hope the list spurs someone on to discover them.
