These lists – I love to hate them – and hate to love them. Maybe they could reflect a horizon of the possible, instead of the inevitable. It’s no longer tenable to celebrate a collection of adult bedtime stories and the bowdlerized histories of victors they reflect. When the Earthnologists come – finding the scorched mixture of nuclear fallout, polar oceans turned to deserts, deserts turned to arctic tundra, and cities caked in ashes like Pompeii, this is what I hope they might stumble on.
