A Separation
To me, this film reveals what it is to be Iranian. It's a gut punch of a movie.
The Lobster
With each of his films, Lanthimos seems to invent an entirely new tone. The Lobster is my favorite because it's the most romantic.
Black Girl
Equal parts revolutionary and stunningly beautiful.
À MA SOEUR!
Clearly, I like movies about girls. Fat Girl manages to be simultaneously hilarious and heartbreaking. It plays with form, dancing from one genre to the next, elevating the subject of girlhood from coming of age to high art.
Adaptation.
Fuck The Player, this is the best movie about movies.
Fear Eats the Soul
Harold and Maude wishes. Fear Eats The Soul breaks your heart, yanks it out of your chest, then stomps on the remains.
When Harry Met Sally...
Let us all worship at the altar of Nora Ephron banter.
Morvern Callar
Nobody captures a vibe like Lynne Ramsay. She paints with music and light.
PERSEPOLIS
Thank god for Marjane Satrapi, who brings fun, wit and heart to the subject matter only Argo’s dared to tackle.
Roozi keh zan shodam
As much as it’s about being female in Iran, The Day I Became a Woman touches on the universal. Hard to find, but worth the search.
