UTVANDRARNA
A detailed, realistic study of emigrants leaving poverty stricken Sweden for a new land.
Pather Panchali
An incredibly moving story of a poor Indian family. It improves with repeated viewings – a sign of a great film.
Only Angels Have Wings
A fast-moving story of a group of fliers in a central American country. Dramatic and often very funny. An expert commercial film.
The Passion of Joan of Arc
One of the very few silent films which seems undated today. Startlingly filmed almost entirely in close ups, well cast and well acted.
The Godfather Part II
The most striking part of a remarkable trilogy. Great attention to character detail makes the film timeless.
My Darling Clementine
Ford's best western. Tightly scripted and shot with great feeling for location and characterisation. Superb performances from Henry Fonda and Victor Mature.
Citizen Kane
An innovative and lively film that is still striking in 2022.
La strada
The height of poetic neorealism. An unforgettable story of a travelling strongman and his simple minded assistant.
The Heiress
A skilfully filmed adaptation of a play – in my opinion, the most successful ever made.
Tangerines
Filmed in Georgia, it is the story of a farmer, caught between warring factions, who has to shelter two soldiers from opposing sides. Well written, acted and directed – it never becomes sententious or pretentious.
