Narrowing my list to ten was difficult enough but ranking them was impossible, so I listed the titles chronologically. All of these films shaped my love of the cinema or changed my understanding of its history. On a different day, I could’ve come up with ten different films, but there were still painful omissions, especially Lean’s Great Expectations and Lubitsch’s To Be or Not to Be.
