People tend to use this space to cheat a bit and namecheck films that somehow didn’t make the cut: I shall be no exception. I could have offered an alternative ten featuring 2001: A Space Odyssey, GoodFellas, RoboCop, This Is Spinal Tap, 25th Hour, Withnail & I, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, Rio Bravo, The Wild Bunch and 8½, and I would be equally content with it.
I also made the arbitrary decision to exclude a number of recent triumphs, such as The Master, Silence, Hard to Be a God, Once upon a Time in Anatolia, and Once upon a Time in Hollywood, making the task slightly less Herculean. In any case, their significance is evident, but whether they belong on the canon is, in the words of Zhou Enlai, too early to say.
