This list is necessarily provisional. Each film marks out a place that might well be filled by another. My selection is informed by being made at a time when thoughts of extinction and catastrophe loom large. It therefore favours preoccupation with loss, with a yearning for contact, with searches for traces or for that which is elusive. There is joy here in the moment, but the aesthetic pleasures are invariably tinged with regret. We may need, in the end, to rely on faith alone.
