I don't know how I managed to submit a list without City Lights, but I did. Several drafts included it. One version contained more by Ford; others listed films by Godard, Vigo, Mizoguchi, N. Ray, Tati, Sternberg, Hawks, Dreyer, Lubitsch, Rossellini, Renoir and Miyazaki. The list I submitted includes the ten very best films I could think of aside from the ones it doesn't.
Each work, however, is its own medium within the medium, one that points to countless other movies that I love and hope others vote for and that many see for a long, long time (I just feel so lucky to have seen them all myself!).
