Pickpocket
1959 France
Whippet slight, and yet it somehow tells the story of the universe in an hour and sixteen minutes.
Apocalypse Now
1979 USA
It leaves me breathless just thinking about it. In the ten years since the last S&S poll Coppola has once again tinkered with his magnum opus. Who knows what this movie will look like in 2032.
Do the Right Thing
1989 USA
No film better sums up the past few years. Thirty three years old, and yet more telling of the present landscape than any contemporary picture.
Further remarks
Encapsulating the spirit of cinema in ten films is very difficult, and truth be told I think that if that is the measurement by which one views my selections then I will be deemed a failure. There are far too many French movies for one thing, and no silent pictures.
