5 things to watch this weekend – 21 to 23 February
Supernatural picnics, an underground boxing ring and a Christmas Party to decide the fate of England. What are you watching this weekend?
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)
Where it’s on? Selected cinemas nationwide, including BFI Southbank

One hundred and twenty-five years ago, three girls disappeared after an ethereal excursion exploring the monolithic hanging rock; the local community got drawn into the eerie mystery as an otherworldly evil slowly overtook them. Fifty years ago, Peter Weir (a maverick director from the Australian New Wave) took this unsolved tale and wound it into a naturalistic blend of horror and thriller, which resulted in his first breakthrough into global recognition as a talented auteur. Today, the BFI have faithfully restored this film into 4k, with a synthetic, atmospheric score and beautifully earthy, muted colours that create a tangible sense of dread throughout the 107-minute runtime.
I’m Still Here (2024)
Where it’s on? Cinemas nationwide, including BFI Southbank
A film that has garnered various critical accolades and awards, including a deserved Golden Globe win for Fernanda Torres as Eunice Paiva. She gives a captivating but restrained performance – one of many reasons the Academy nominated it for the Best Film category ahead of this year’s Oscars (the first Brazilian-produced film to be so honoured). Adapted from an autobiographical memoir of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, Walter Salles weaves the author’s reflections of an oppressive time in Brazil under military dictatorship through the eyes of his mother, who is trying to keep her memories of an idyllic family life from fading away.
A Thousand Blows (2024-)
Where it’s on? All episodes on Disney+
The heavyweight collaboration of Steven Knight and Stephen Graham enters the ring with the knockout drama A Thousand Blows. Aesthetically similar to Peaky Blinders, the TV miniseries reveals the criminal underbelly of London, where one punch can make you the king or queen of the capital. Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) is a man of Jamaican descent who quickly gets swept up in a gang war between Sugar Goodson (Graham) and Erin Doherty (Mary Carr), who both have big plans for the city. Hezekiah becomes a puppet in their game of power.
The Lion in Winter (1968)
Where it’s on? 4K Blu-ray

Newly restored on 4K Blu-ray. Henry II, King of England, contemplates the state of his country, wondering which of his three sons will take the throne after his death. And so – in the cold winter of 1183 – he holds a courtly Christmas festivity; but then his estranged wife arrives to complicate the succession. Will the throne survive the holidays? Featuring an Oscar-winning performance from Katherine Hepburn, an equally incredible performance from Peter O’Toole and notable early performances from Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton, this is an exceptional chamber piece.
The White Lotus (Season 3)
Where it’s on? Episodes released weekly on Now TV
After two Emmy-award-winning seasons, Mike White takes his darkly comic indentation of the upper class to Thailand, where more vapid but enigmatic guests arrive for another ‘fun and relaxing’ holiday. Through a satirical lens, the ensemble cast is tangled in a web of lies, as the hotel they reside in reveals these characters’ true natures. The cast features many familiar faces, such as Jason Isaacs, Walton Goggins, Leslie Bibb and Aimee Lou Wood.
