Oscars 2021: the nominations in full

Mank, David Fincher’s film about the writing of Citizen Kane (1941), leads the race going into the 2021 Oscars, picking up 10 nominations.

UK talents feature prominently in the four acting categories. Two Brits are up for best actress, Carey Mulligan for Promising Young Woman and Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of a Woman, while Olivia Colman is in contention for best supporting actress for The Father.

Three Brits are in contention for best actor: Gary Oldman for Mank, Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal and Anthony Hopkins for The Father. Meanwhile, in the best supporting actor category, Sacha Baron Cohen is nominated for The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Daniel Kaluuya is in the running for his role as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah, which is currently on BFI Player.

The British actress, writer and director Emerald Fennell gets three nominations for Promising Young Woman, for best director and best original screenplay and as a producer of the best picture-nominated film. Fennell is the first British woman ever to be nominated for best director. With Chloé Zhao also receiving a nomination for best director for Nomadland, this is the first time in the Oscars’ 93-year history that two women have featured in the category.

A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, from Britain’s Aardman, is nominated for best animated film, with British talent in the craft categories including Sean Bobbitt for best cinematography for Judas and the Black Messiah and Alexander Byrne for best costume design for Emma.

Among the nominated films that were first unveiled to UK audiences at the BFI London Film Festival are Nomadland, One Night in Miami…, Another Round (which won the festival’s audience award for best film), Time and the animated films Soul and Wolfwalkers.

The releases of nominated films Sound of Metal and Minari are supported through the BFI Audience Fund with National Lottery money.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 26 April.
