Oliver! star Ron Moody dies aged 91

Moody is best known for playing the pickpocket Fagin in the Oscar-winning 1968 musical Oliver!

Actor Ron Moody, best known for playing Charles Dickens’ master pickpocket Fagin in the 1968 film version of the musical Oliver!, has died at the age of 91.

Moody received an Oscar nomination and won a Golden Globe for the part, and Carol Reed’s film garnered the Oscar for best picture.

Born in Tottenham, London on 8 January 1924, Moody took to acting late, receiving his breakthrough when he was cast as Fagin in the long-running stage version of Lionel Bart’s musical in the 1960s.

After the Oliver! film, Moody became a regular face on the big and small screen, beginning with another Dickens role, that of Uriah Heep in a 1969 TV version of David Copperfield.

More recently he joined the residents of Albert Square as Edwin Caldecott in EastEnders.
