Kneecap (2024)

Kneecap leads the pack going into this year’s British Independent Film Awards, picking up 14 nominations. The haul for Rich Peppiatt’s exuberant comedy about the eponymous west Belfast hip-hop trio, which was backed by the BFI Filmmaking Fund with National Lottery money, includes nods for best director, best British independent film and best joint lead performance for the Kneecap trio Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin and JJ Ó Dochartaigh.

Love Lies Bleeding, Rose Glass’s bodybuilding noir, takes second place with 12 nominations, including best director, best British independent film and best joint lead performance for stars Katy O’Brian and Kristen Stewart.

The Outrun, Nora Fingsheidt’s adaptation of the Amy Liptrot novel, follows with 9 nominations, while Andrea Arnold’s Bird, Rungano Nyoni’s On Becoming a Guinea Fowl and Sally El Hosaini and James Krishna Floyd’s Unicorns each have 7.

Bird is also backed by the BFI Filmmaking Fund, with other BFI funded films receiving nominations including Hoard (6 nominations), Santosh (4 nominations), Sister Midnight (4 nominations) and Sebastian (1 nomination). Grand Theft Hamlet, which was funded via the BFI Doc Society Fund, also received 4 nominations, while Bring Them Down, funded via the UK Global Screen Fund, received two.

In the international independent film category, Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light, which will be released in cinemas by BFI Distribution in November, goes up against Anora, La chimera, No Other Land and The Seed of the Sacred Fig.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 8 December.
