BAFTAs 2017: the nominations in full
La La Land dances into the lead with 11 nominations, with Arrival and Nocturnal Animals both grabbing nine.
Damien Chazelle’s Tinseltown musical La La Land has been anointed as the frontrunner in the lead up to this year’s BAFTA awards, scooping nominations in 11 categories including best film, best director, best actor for Ryan Gosling and best actress for Emma Stone.
Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi drama Arrival and Tom Ford’s thriller Nocturnal Animals both garnered nine nominations a piece, while Manchester by the Sea follows on six.
Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake competes for both best film and outstanding British film, also grabbing nods for Loach’s direction, Paul Laverty’s script and for Hayley Squires as best supporting actress. Also on five nominations are Hacksaw Ridge, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Lion.
Other films nominated in the outstanding British film category are American Honey, Notes on Blindness (also nominated for best documentary), Under the Shadow, Denial and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
I, Daniel Blake, American Honey and Notes on Blindness were all backed by the BFI Film Fund. Other BFI-backed films compete in the outstanding debut category, with The Girl with All the Gifts nominated for writer Mike Carey and producer Camille Gatin, and The Hard Stop nominated for writer-director-producer George Amponsah and writer-producer Dionne Walker.
Among the nominated films that first screened to UK audiences at the 2016 BFI London Film Festival are La La Land, Arrival, Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight, American Honey, Nocturnal Animals, Lion, The 13th, Toni Erdmann and The Eagle Huntress. Outstanding British debut contender The Pass was the opening night film at BFI Flare in 2016.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 12 February at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
