Joker on top as BAFTA nominations 2020 are announced
And the nominations are...
Todd Phillips’ Joker has come out on top of the pack after the announcement of the nominations for the 2020 BAFTAs. The supervillain origin story is laden with 11 nominations, including best film, best director and best actor for Joaquin Phoenix.
Close on its heels with 10 nominations each are Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and Quentin Tarantino’s Once upon a Time… in Hollywood. Sam Mendes’ First World War drama 1917 follows with nine nominations.
It’s also a successful crop for Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, which picks up six nominations, while tying on five a piece are Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, Fernando Meirelles’ The Two Popes and Greta Gerwig’s Little Women.
In the outstanding British film category, Mark Jenkin’s low-budget Cornish drama Bait (a breakout success for BFI Distribution) and Ken Loach’s Sorry We Missed You (backed by the BFI Film Fund) will compete with 1917, For Sama, Rocketman and The Two Popes. Bait’s Mark Jenkin is also up for the award for outstanding British debut. Another BFI Film Fund backed title to get a nomination is Wild Rose, which sees Jessie Buckley up for best actress. The BFI Network-funded short Goldfish competes for best British short.
The Irishman was the closing night gala at last year’s BFI London Film Festival. Other festival alumni films to pick up nominations include Jojo Rabbit, Marriage Story, The Two Popes, The Lighthouse, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Wild Rose and The Personal History of David Copperfield.
The winners will be announced on 2 February 2020.
