Becker inherited this production about the painter Modigliani when Max Ophuls fell ill. While Gérard Philippe plays the dissolute artist failing to sell his work in a predominantly mournful key, the film is mainly memorable for the vivid portrayals of the two important women in his life: his masochistic mistress and the devoted model Jeanne, superbly incarnated by Anouk Aimee.
