Even more than The Spirit of the Beehive, Erice’s second feature is a feast for the eyes. The exquisite compositions and lighting echo Spanish baroque painting, while various sets – the isolated family home, a cinema, an empty hotel restaurant – are invested with a numinous power wholly appropriate to a tale of a woman’s poignant remembrance of her mystery-filled childhood in 50s Spain.
