Emil Jannings is superb as the stolid, bourgeois Professor Rath. Marlene Dietrich is in her element as Lola, the brazenly sexual cabaret singer who readily becomes the subject (rather than object) of his obsession. And sadomasochism rules in this acerbic tragicomedy.
