An all-female cast in a plot-thin feature celebrating the joys of Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) was an unlikely UK box office smash in 1943.
Moie Charles co-adapted her own story, which Leslie Howard ‘rescued’ from the MOI for the big screen, inspired by the need to reassure the public that the ATS was a suitable environment for women of all backgrounds, and not a hotbed of sexual promiscuity.
