Busby Berkeley tributes aside, Russell’s version of Sandy Wilson’s 50s stage musical – itself a pastiche of 20s musicals – is a pleasingly airy affair, with the original’s wit retained. Tony Walton’s production design and Shirley Russell’s costumes ensure the film looks just right, while Twiggy is perfectly cast as naive ingénue Polly. The supporting cast includes the familiar faces of many Russell regulars.
