“The annual residency by the BFI sees cinematic experts present film screenings of new and old favourites. Included in the week are also interactive workshops and talks for both adults and children who are interested in the world of film.” – Forbes
Our partnership with Hillside Beach Resort helps the BFI to promote film culture and transferable filmmaking skills while supporting emerging filmmakers.
Immersive screenings
Soaking up West Side Story with magnificent views of Turkey’s turquoise coast or the BFI funded Oscar-nominated Aftersun on a traditional Turkish sailboat, guests at Hillside Beach resort have enjoyed a series of screenings curated by the BFI during a multi-year partnership.
The feeling of sailing out from the resort and the intimate setting of the boat made the Aftersun screening a magical experience.”Kimberley Sheehan, BFI Curator
BFI curators give in-person introductions to each film’s social and historical context, helping guests connect with each film by understanding how and why they were made, what was motivating the directors and interesting facts.
Holiday workshops
Fun, challenging and rewarding, our filmmaking workshops give children and young people the chance to experience the end-to-end production of a film and develop transferable filmmaking skills while making new friends.
The workshops feature fun film-based warm-ups, script writing, prop-making, acting workshops, location scouting and production skills. After trying out roles like director, cinematographer, sound and lighting, acting and production design, participants are often inspired learn about or work in film, with many wanting to explore BFI Film Academy.
Participants work together to create a short film, encouraging planning, strategic thinking and artistic expression, while helping to develop communication skills, emotional intelligence and build confidence. Each year, their short film is presented at a mini gala event for parents to enjoy.
This experience has been indescribable. I loved learning cinematography and being the Director of Photography, and learning how to use the camera. It was an amazing experience and really cool.”Herbie, aged 11
In a new partnership with Sony for 2023, children used Sony’s FDR-AX53 4K Handycam to record high quality footage for their short film alongside an A7SM3 Mirrorless camera and full frame lense to capture production stills.
With a shared goal of supporting emerging filmmakers, partnering with Sony gives young workshop attendees the chance to experience shooting on professional equipment.
Harry (aged 8) has hugely come out of his comfort zone and made some great friends while completing these fun and engaging workshops. The enthusiasm and professionalism of the BFI team has really stood out and it’s been a wonderful experience for him.”Sarah Rumbol, parent
