Curator, non-fiction
Steve is our Curator of Advertising and Publicity Films. The BFI National Archive holds a rich and extensive collection of advertising films (dating from the Victorian era to the present day). As well as actively seeking material to compliment the advertising holdings, Steve is developing a systematic curatorial plan for managing, interpreting and providing access to this important collection.
Steve has a wealth of curatorial experience including previous work on the Archive’s first major HLF project, the British Transport Films DVD series, the Geoffrey Jones ‘Rhythm of Film’ DVD, the restoration of Night Mail (1936) and our acclaimed GPO Film Unit project.
Steve has previously carried out archival consultancies for many established institutions and archives including Film London, the Science Museum, the National Library of Scotland and the British Universities Film and Video Council. As well as his curatorial background, Steve is no stranger to audience development and has recently overseen delivery of a digital screen network in the Midlands.
Steve has a passion for industrial documentary film, particularly in the fields of transport and oil. He has contributed to many film publications, writing prolifically on the subject of railways in film, British transport films, Film Centre and the Shell Film Unit. He is a historical consultant to the Grierson Trust and has been a judge at the prestigious Grierson Awards.
