Curator, Archive Platforms
Michael joined the BFI in September 2024 as Curator for Archive Platforms, working across the organisation’s digital channels such as Mediatheque, Replay, BFI Player and YouTube to present archival film and television to the public.
Outside of the BFI, Michael works as a writer, curator and producer specialising in film and video games, with a keen interest in making complex or intimidating areas of cultural history accessible for curious audiences. He is the co-creator of the animation-focused podcast Ghibliotheque, and co-author of five books on animation and Asian Cinema, including Ghibliotheque — The Unofficial Guide to the Films of Studio Ghibli, the Ghibliotheque Anime Movie Guide and Film Korea.
Michael’s writing has appeared in the pages of Sight and Sound and Little White Lies, and from 2019 to 2022, he was Series Producer and Commissioning Editor for the BBC iPlayer series Inside Cinema and Inside Games. Over the years he has programmed and hosted events and screenings all over the UK and has created regular screening series at the Prince Charles Cinema, the Barbican Centre and the BFI IMAX.
