Film Preservation Engineer
Chris joined the BFI in 2009 after 20 years in the IT sector as a Service Engineer. Prior to that Chris apprenticed to Marconi Space and Defence Systems as an Electronics Engineer. Here he became the design authority for a successful, fully Automatic Test Suit for Guidance Systems.
His current role is that of Film Preservation Engineer. He is responsible for overseeing the day to day maintenance and repairs of the operational equipment and machinery within the BFI National Archive’s Film Lab and liaising with outside contractors. He has the challenge of finding bespoke solutions for working with non-standard film formats, or formats where the equipment to view their content no longer exist. Chris has also acted as the technical advisor for investigations into ergonomic improvements to operations within the lab areas.
