Digital Media Specialists Team Leader
Andrew has worked at the BFI National Archive since 1989 across different teams dealing with varying media formats including film, video and latterly evolving digital workflows. He is currently the Digital Media Specialists Team Leader at the archive. Specific areas of experience include: working with digital media and file formats, film handling and identification, image quality assessment and video format migration (including 2” quadruplex). Andrew was the first Digital Operations Specialist at the Conservation Centre and has been instrumental in creating innovative technical processes and workflows that brought new ways of working with digital materials for preservation and access and assisted in enabling the archive’s analogue collections to be joined up with the digital world.
Andrew is now the team leader for the Digital Media Specialists Team (also known as the Digital Operations or DigiOps team) which is based at the BFI National Archive in Berkhamsted. The team was formed initially to address the increasing need to accession digital media into the BFI National Collection. The Digital Media Specialists now also assist in enabling access to digital media already in the collection through transcoding of file formats, digital file transfers, quality control of incoming and outgoing digital media including Digital Cinema formats and working closely with other BFI colleagues supporting the activities of archive sales, Curatorial teams and BFI Film Fund amongst others to help develop best practice in their use and understanding of new digital media formats.
