BFI Film Academy Future Skills Traineeship

The Future Skills Traineeship is back for 2022 and we are looking for talented young people to take part in a 25-week traineeship for feature films or high-end TV series.

Who can apply

This opportunity is open exclusively to Film Academy alumni. You must be aged 18 or over and not enrolled in school or university in September. If you have already taken part in a Future Skills Traineeship you will not be eligible for this opportunity.

Skills required:

  • ability to take instructions and follow them effectively

  • ability to proactively look for new tasks and opportunities to help the department
  • flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced and changing environment
  • ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure with attention to detail
  • ability to establish relationships across the team, trainees and other departments where required
  • ability to earn the trust and respect of colleagues, partners and customers and treats other with respect
  • punctuality and being prepared to work long hours
  • strong communication skills and ability to work with a diverse range of personalities 
  • enthusiasm, versatility and a willingness to learn
  • ability to travel as needed (driving licence would be an advantage)

Location and dates

Traineeship will start between October to November for a minimum of 25 weeks. The location of traineeship will be either at Pinewood Studios, Iver Heath or Shinfield Studios, Reading.

Costs

There are no costs to participate. Trainees will be paid an allowance that at the minimum is equivalent to the London living wage for the duration of the traineeship.

Accommodation

You will be supported with relocation if required.

Roles available for traineeship

AD trainee

The AD trainee provides administrative and on-set support to the assistant directors. The trainee will support the ADs to ensure the team can conduct their jobs efficiently, accurately and on time. This is a great opportunity to learn within an on-set role, with the ability to take on additional tasks as experience develops.

Art department trainee

The art department trainee provides assistance and support for all members of the art department as required, to ensure they can conduct their jobs efficiently and effectively. This entry-level position is a great opportunity to learn about the art department, with the ability to take on additional tasks as experience develops.

Camera trainee

The camera trainee provides backup support for all members of the camera team to ensure they can conduct their jobs efficiently and effectively. This entry-level position is a great opportunity to learn about the camera and the workings of a feature film or high-end TV production, with the ability to take on additional tasks as experience develops.

Costume trainee

The costume trainee provides administrative and backup support to the costume team, while providing an opportunity to learn about the costume department. The trainee will support the department to ensure the team can conduct their jobs efficiently, accurately and on time. A great opportunity to learn about costumes, with the ability to take on additional task as experience develops.

Finance trainee

The finance trainee provides administrative and backup support to the production accounting team while providing an opportunity to learn about the production environment. The trainee will support to the accounts department to ensure the accountants can do their jobs efficiently, accurately and on time. A great opportunity to learn about production finance, with the ability to take on additional tasks based on performance.

Grip trainee

The grip trainee will shadow and observe the members of the grips departments, providing them with support while being given an opportunity to learn about the department and the structure of a feature film. This is a great opportunity to learn about the role of a key grip, with the ability to take on additional task as experience develops. The role of trainee grip is physically demanding and involves a considerable amount of manual handling.

Hair and makeup trainee

The hair and makeup trainee provides administrative and backup support to the hair and makeup team while providing an opportunity to learn about the department. The trainee will support the department to ensure the team can conduct their jobs efficiently, accurately and on time. A great opportunity to learn about hair and makeup, with the ability to take on additional tasks as experience develops.

Lighting trainee

The lighting trainee provides administrative and backup support to the lighting team, while providing an opportunity to learn about the department. The trainee will support the department to ensure the team can conduct their jobs efficiently, accurately and on time. A great opportunity to learn about lighting, with the ability to take on additional tasks as experience develops.

Locations trainee

The locations trainee provides support to the locations team, while providing an opportunity to learn about the department. The trainee will support the locations department to ensure the team can conduct their jobs efficiently, accurately and on time. A great opportunity to learn about locations, with the ability to take on additional tasks as experience develops.

Production office trainee

The production office trainee provides administrative support to the production office team while providing an opportunity to learn about the department and the structure of a feature film. The trainee will support the production office to ensure the team can conduct their jobs efficiently, accurately and on time. This is a great opportunity to learn about production, with the ability to take on additional tasks as experience develops.

Props trainee

The props trainee provides administrative and backup support to the props team while providing an opportunity to learn about the department. The trainee will support the department to ensure the team can conduct their jobs efficiently, accurately and on time. A great opportunity to learn about props, with the ability to take on additional tasks as experience develops.

Sound trainee

The sound trainee provides administrative and backup support to the sound team while providing an opportunity to learn about the department. The trainee will support the department to ensure the team can conduct their jobs efficiently, accurately and on time. A great opportunity to learn about sound with the ability to take on additional tasks as experience develops.

Video and DIT trainee

The video and DIT trainee provides administrative and backup support to the video/DIT team, while providing an opportunity to learn about the department. The trainee will support the department to ensure the team can conduct their jobs efficiently, accurately and on time. A great opportunity to learn about live image feeds, with the ability to take on additional tasks as experience develops.

Completed applications must be submitted by the extended deadline of 10am Monday 11 July.
