Screen New Deal: Transformation Plan for Wales

The transformation plan provides a technical routemap for stakeholders in Wales to transform the film and high-end television (HETV) industry to a zero-carbon, zero-waste sector, and is designed to act as a blueprint for use in other UK nations and England’s regions.

The Screen New Deal: Transformation Plan for Wales follows the BFI National Lottery-funded Screen New Deal report released in 2020. A first of its kind, this transformation plan provides a technical routemap for stakeholders in Wales to transform the film and high-end television (HETV) industry to a zero-carbon, zero-waste sector. While this work has a focus on industry in Wales, it is designed to act as a blueprint for use in other UK nations and England’s regions with most of the findings and recommendations being broadly applicable across the whole industry in the UK.

The transformation plan data capture and research was commissioned by the BFI’s National Lottery Research and Statistics Fund and led by BAFTA albert, Arup, working with the BFI, Creative Wales, Ffilm Cymru Wales and Media Cymru.

Wales was chosen as a pilot area due to its fast-growing creative industry cluster and ambitious sustainability targets giving it the potential to demonstrate meaningful change. The plan sets out 14 core recommendations for the film and HETV industry in Wales to implement between now and 2030 to make the necessary progress to align with climate targets. These are grouped into four key themes:

  • energy and fuel resources
  • rethinking transport
  • a circular film industry
  • information creation and dissemination

Details and case study learnings are detailed in the report.
