The BFI Film Fund and Class: Breaking Down the Data

From data collected from applicants to the BFI Film Fund 2019-2022 this report details the socio-economic background of some directors, producers and writers working in the UK independent film industry for the first time.

This report has been collated by Professor Dave O’Brien and Dr Mark Taylor of the University of Sheffield and Dr Peter Campbell of the University of Liverpool with input from Danny Leigh.

Findings informed our new Inclusion Target, set in March 2023: working towards 39% of BFI National Lottery funding to be awarded to people from a working-class background.

This work also helps set our strategies to support more working-class talent progress in the industry.
