Black History on Screen: a Black History Month event for KS2

Celebrate Black History Month with us in this event exploring the short 1966 film, Jemima and Johnny.

Jemima + Johnny (1966)

Date: 15 October 2024
Time: 11:00am to 12:00pm
Location: Online

Event details

This online event offers an opportunity to engage with a film which acts as a window directly into 1960s Britain and raises important questions about Black History and the experience of immigrants to the UK. Whilst containing some challenging themes, Jemima and Johnny (1966) is an uplifting, optimistic story about the friendship between two very young children.

Having recently moved to London from Jamaica with her family, little Jemima meets streetwise Johnny, a five-year old boy from the area, who promptly takes her on a tour of the neighbourhood. Johnny and Jemima form a special friendship, innocent to the racial tensions within the community spearheaded by Johnny’s father. Seeing their friendship, Johnny’s father is forced to question his own racist views.

Directed by African-born filmmaker and anti-Apartheid activist Lionel Ngakane, Jemima + Johnny offers a refreshingly optimistic window into a pocket of 1960s London and racial tensions within a community that still resonate today.
