It’s a tie at the top, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel each securing nine nominations in the run-up to the 2015 Academy Awards. Close behind with eight nods is the British espionage drama The Imitation Game, and Boyhood and American Sniper, with six each.

In a strong year for British acting talent, Benedict Cumberbatch (for The Imitation Game) and Eddie Redmayne (for The Theory of Everything) are recognised in the best actor category, while Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) will compete for best actress. The Imitation Game’s Keira Knightley is up for best supporting actress.

To add to its acting nods, Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything took nominations for best picture, music and adapted screenplay. Also with five nominations apiece are Foxcatcher, Interstellar and Whiplash.

Civil rights drama Selma had a more disappointing showing, nominated in only the best picture and best song categories. Another surprise was the absence of The Lego Movie from the best animated feature section.

With her nomination for best supporting actress for Into the Woods, Meryl Streep brings her tally to a record 19 nominations. Meanwhile, Robert Duvall, at 84, breaks the record for the oldest actor ever to compete as best supporting actor.

Mike Leigh’s Mr. Turner, backed by the BFI Film Fund, is recognised for its production design, cinematography, original score and costume design.

There were British successes in the short film categories too, with The Bigger Picture nominated for best animated short and Boogaloo and Graham up for best live-action short. The latter was backed by the BFI and Northern Ireland Screen.

“This year’s Oscar nominations are a cracking result for British film,” comments BFI CEO Amanda Nevill, “recognising the sheer brilliance and skill of our talent working both in front of and behind the camera. It’s so exciting to see distinctive and passionate filmmaking across the board from independent productions such as The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything and Mr. Turner to international films such as Into the Woods, Maleficent and Guardians of the Galaxy which give our highly skilled crews and production facilities opportunities to show just what they can do. With new British filmmakers making their mark in short filmmaking we have much more to look forward to in future. We congratulate them all.”

The Imitation Game was the opening night gala of the 58th BFI London Film Festival, with Birdman, CITIZENFOUR, Foxcatcher, Ida, Leviathan, Song of the Sea, Timbuktu, Whiplash, Wild and Wild Tales among the other nominated films first seen by UK audiences at the Festival.

The winners will be announced on 22 February 2015 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater.
