Behind the Mask (2018)

Five short films have been created by new filmmakers to highlight the inspirational people and projects helped by National Lottery funding.

The films were premiered at an event at BFI Southbank on 31 October featuring a Q&A with BAFTA-nominated director Lucy Cohen (Kingdom of Us) and actor Charley Palmer Rothwell (Dunkirk, Best) hosted by BBC critic and broadcaster Rhianna Dhillon.

Clare Halsted – Behind the Mask

Director: Christopher Chanudom

Former Olympic fencer Clare Halsted runs Finchley Foil, a fencing club aimed at children from five to 16. In Christopher Chanudom’s film she reveals her past in the sport and explains how it has become more accessible.

2Faced Dance Company

Director: Rebecca Doctor

Rebecca Doctor’s film looks at Hereford’s 2Faced Dance Company. Founded by Tamsin Fitzgerald in 1999, the all-male company tours across the world. Here, the boys and men in the company explain how dancing and the company has enriched their lives.

CABNAB (Carry a Basketball, Not a Blade)

Director: Byran Ferrol

Anthony Okereafor set up NASSA (Newham All Star Sports Academy) after the death of two of his friends from knife crime. Byran Ferrol’s film unveils some of the shocking statistics around knife violence and explains how the Carry a Basketball, Not a Blade campaign is helping young people avoid crime and gang activity.

Foyle First Responders

Directors: Hope Kemp, Ronan Corrigan

Foyle First Responders looks at taxi driver Sean Dillon and his volunteer work as a first responder to emergencies in Derry, Northern Ireland. Hope Kemp’s film offers a sensitive portrayal of the important work done by Sean and his fellow volunteers.
