Though Kubrick’s foray into horror was met with a bemusement from contemporary critics, and even dismissed by some as a “failed” genre film, its status grew in subsequent year to be understood increasingly as a masterpiece in horror - resisting, twisting and ultimately transcending its conventions in a way never done before.
