A middle-class woman (Huppert) leaves her possessive husband for a disreputable, womanizing crook (Depardieu). Their tempestuous relationship reveals hidden desires and fears in each of them that push them further into dangerous emotional territory. Director Maurice Pialat considered this his most personal film, reportedly surprised by the depths of psychological exploration he had achieved.
